Recirculation Differences in Veno-Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation By Different Types of Cannula Designs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Effectiveness of veno-venous (VV) ECMO treatment is in part dependent on the magnitude of recirculation. The recirculation fraction (RF) is for example influenced by cannulation type (dual lumen or single lumen cannulas), cannula position, pump flow, and cardiac output. RF might also be affected by cannula design. Knowledge of RF related to a certain cannula design might influence the choice of cannula and hence improve treatment efficiency.

Severe hypoxemia during veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: exploring the limits of extracorporeal respiratory support
OBJECTIVE Veno-venous extracorporeal oxygenation for respiratory support has emerged as a rescue alternative for patients with hypoxemia. However, in some patients with more severe lung injury, extracorporeal support fails to restore arterial oxygenation. Based on four clinical vignettes, the aims of this article were to describe the pathophysiology of this concerning problem and to discuss pos...

Recirculation during dual lumen veno-venous (DLVV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a dynamic event that results in a fraction of the oxygenated blood exiting the arterial lumen and immediately shunting back into the venous lumen. Excessive recirculation will result in suboptimal oxygen delivery to the patient. Ultrasound dilution is a technology that has been shown to rapidly quan...
متن کاملRecirculation during veno-venous extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation--a simulation study.
PURPOSE Veno-venous ECMO is indicated in reversible life-threatening respiratory failure without life-threatening circulatory failure. Recirculation of oxygenated blood in the ECMO circuit decreases efficiency of patient oxygen delivery but is difficult to measure. We seek to identify and quantify some of the factors responsible for recirculation in a simulation model and compare with clinical ...

Veno-venous and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is used to support the cardiac and pulmonary systems in the setting of acute failure. Maintaining adequate ECMO flow is crucial for the success of the therapy. Sudden decrease in venous return on ECMO has multiple etiologies, such as intravascular hypovolemia, malposition or kink of the venous cannula, suction occl...

Introduction: Optimal positioning of double lumen bicaval canula for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support used as a rescue measure in refractory hypoxaemia is essential to facilitate adequate oxygenation, prevent recirculation and avoid complications. Method: Echocardiography via transoesophageal or transthoracic windows can be used as guidance and as a surveillance technique to p...
